Yuzawa Area
Yuzawa Area Highlight

Niigata (the prefecture in which Yuzawa is located) is well-known as the home of great Japanese sake, or (often called nihonshu in Japan) thanks to its high-quality rice, which happens to be one of sake’s main ingredients.

From the Staff
There are currently 95 different sake breweries in Niigata. Here you can try the representative brew from each.

If you happen to fancy one of the brands you’ve tried, you can pick up a bottle right there in the shop. You can also sample locally produced snacks for free.

Tokamachi Muikamachi Area
Tokamachi Muikamachi Area Highlight
Hegi Soba
This local specialty features a flavor that can only be enjoyed here. Hegi Soba is eaten by grabbing a bundle of soba noodles with your chopsticks and dipping them in a rich, soy sauce-base dipping sauce. At the soba restaurants, you can enjoy the dish even more by adding tempura fried shrimp and vegetables for a tasty, crunchy complement to the noodles. At the end of the meal, you can ask for sobayu, the soup used to boil your noodles, which you can then pour into your remaining dipping sauce. Drinking this light-bodied, warm concoction is a good way to finish the meal and warm your body.Bijin Bayashi Forest
This thick forest of 80-year-old Japanese beech trees is so beautiful that it gained the name “Bijin Bayashi,” which literally means “beautiful woman forest,” likening the beauty of the forest to that of a beautiful woman. It is of course gorgeous during the snowy season, but it is also particularly striking in the fall when the leaves change to vibrant shades of yellow and orange from the end of October.
