An Onsen Ryokan Inn where the Ocean View is the Star Attraction.

Stay at Shimoda Yamatokan
for the Best in Fresh Seafood & Hot Springs

Located in Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula, the Shimoda Yamatokan resort ryokan (Japanese-style inn) is built on high ground along the coast, facing the beautiful white-sand Tatado beach. All rooms come with their own ocean-view terrace.
In mid-January this past winter we went to take a first-hand look at the facilities and stayed in a room with en-suite open-air hot spring bath, where you can relax while watching the ocean view, and tried the fresh Izu seafood at the newly renovated charcoal-grill hotel restaurant, Umi.

Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula: A resort area only 2 hours 30 minutes from Tokyo

The famous hot spring resort of Atami - the doorway to the Izu Peninsula - is less than 1 hour from Tokyo by shinkansen (bullet train). This area, blessed with the natural beauty of both sea and mountains, is a popular tourist area on Tokyo's outskirts.

Heading south from Atami by train you can watch the ocean from the window. By taking the JR Ito Line and then transferring to the Izukyu Line you can get to the terminus of Shimoda in about 1 hour 30 minutes. (Or you can take the Tokkyu (Limited Express) Odoriko train directly from Tokyo Station which will get you there in 2 hours 30 minutes.) Shimoda, located just about on the tip of the peninsula, is the place where the US' Commodore Matthew C. Perry landed his black ships in 1853, thus ending 200 years of Japan's self-imposed national isolation and marks the spot that caused Japan to reopen itself to the world.

The Shimoda Yamatokan is reached in less than 10 minutes from Shimoda Station via free shuttle bus. Seeing the view of the ocean from the lobby of the hotel, high above the coast, will increase your feeling of excitement about your stay in Japan.

The view of beautiful Tatado Beach

A Japanese-style room with comfortable chairs: Relax in a room with its own open-air bath

We stayed in a room with a private open-air bath on the second floor. As is normally found in Japanese ryokan inns, the floors inside the room were made of tatami straw mats; however, the area in front of the large window was made of wooden flooring and had some chairs that were perfect for lounging and watching the ocean.

The window opened out onto a terrace, which flowed out and felt like an integrated part of the room, giving the whole living space a feeling of openness.

Taking a look up at the night sky from the terrace, you will see it glittering with stars. The changing color of the ocean at dawn and dusk is yet another sight to behold.

Sleeping at a ryokan on a futon laid out on a tatami straw-mat floor is a uniquely Japanese experience.

A wide variety of baths to make your hot spring experience even more enjoyable

The whole of the Shimoda Yamatokan's 5th (top) floor is a hot spring bathing area called Paradise View. The design of the baths is split into Japanese/Western-style areas, which include open-air baths, Jacuzzis, and Japanese cypress wooden baths, meaning you can enjoy the ocean view from different types of baths.

The bathing areas are open to either men or women at different times, meaning that during your stay you will be able to try out all the baths available!

The bath I would most highly recommend has to be the mountain-top open-air bath called Kirara, reached by climbing the stairs outdoors. This open-air bath is surrounded in nature - the sun, sea and mountains - and is overflowing in rustic beauty. The feeling of being there was something really special.

The open-air bath, Kirara

I made the most of the opportunity and took the chance to try out the luxurious reservable (family) open-air baths. There are two to choose from, both housed in the Spa Villa: Pine (JPY 4,000 for 50 min) and Bamboo (JPY 3,000 for 50 min). Discounts are available depending on the length of time required. The baths have a modern design with a pine or bamboo theme and are private spaces finished to a high standard. The feeling of satisfaction of relaxing there, enjoying the refreshing morning breeze, made me wish I could spend the whole of my stay right in that spot!

Plenty of seasonal seafood on offer at the charcoal grill restaurant for dinner & breakfast

We had dinner at the newly renovated charcoal-grill hotel restaurant, Umi. Each booth in the restaurant is partitioned for extra privacy, allowing guests to relax at mealtime.

Dinner started with a course of hors d'oeuvres and local, seasonal sashimi (raw fish). On the charcoal grill located in the middle of the table, we were able to grill our own Japanese scallops and high-quality abalone.

The meal was made all the more enjoyable thanks to the sweet smell and the sound of the food sizzling on the grill. As the seafood was fresh and could even be eaten raw, we didn't have to worry about whether it was undercooked. Or, if you want, you can ask one of the staff members to cook the food for you.

We then had the local specialty fish (called a Splendid Alfonsino) cooked in a pot, and then ended the meal with a mixture of the fish soup, rice and vegetables called zosui... but not before having our selection from the dessert buffet, which included cakes and fruits.

Cooking the delicious-looking scallops brought a big smile to our faces!

For breakfast, we were able to choose from three types of dried food to cook on the grill. After a little while, one of the waiting staff appeared with trolley on which there was a hot stone pot, into which they poured hot water and spring onions to make a delicious-smelling miso soup right in front of our eyes. Dessert was a colorful vegetable-juice jelly. This breakfast will certainly give you the energy you need to start the day.

As well as making best use of the distinctive flavors of the specially selected ingredients, the food here allowed us to enjoy a lot of painstakingly prepared seafood, too.
For a typical Japanese inn experience, where you can enjoy seasonal, local seafood, hot springs, and great ocean vistas, why not try the Shimoda Yamatokan?

If you are coming all the way to Izu, before or after your stay at the Shimoda Yamatokan, it is definitely worth staying at Ito City's Seizan Yamato ryokan. With its high-end mix of the traditional and the modern, here you can immerse your senses in Japanese beauty.
Ito is only 30 minutes from Atami by train, and the ryokan is only 10 minutes from the station by shuttle service.

The ryokan's modern Japanese-style structure is located on a quiet hilltop, slightly elevated from the town, allowing views over the Ito townscape, mountains, and ocean.

The hospitality of the Seizan Yamato starts from the very moment you arrive. With the sound of the clear stream bubbling through the Japanese garden in the background, you make your way into the elegant Japanese-style entrance hall and then into the lounge, where a specially made welcome drink awaits you before check-in.

Female guests are then able to choose a yukata (light cotton kimono) to wear from a range of patterns and colors.
There is English information on offer, making it easy for guests to spend a relaxing and hassle-free stay at this Japanese-style ryokan inn.

The Ito Onsen area (in which the Seizan Yamato is located) boasts the highest volume of spring water in the whole Kanto region. The baths in this ryokan use hot spring water directly from the source, meaning that guests can make the absolute most of the region's fresh spring water.

The large indoor and open-air public bathing areas are separated by gender, with the areas for use by male and female guests changing each morning, so that during your stay you will be able to try out all the baths available. There are also private baths that can be reserved and used for free.

Surrender to the relaxing, quality waters and slip into an extraordinary new world.

A relaxing salon called "YUAGARI DOKORO" next to the spa entrance. Complimentary refreshments will be good for cool down. (photo left)

One of the main events when staying at a ryokan is dinner. At Seizan Yamato, the kaiseki-style individual dishes are served in-room and are made using a variety of seasonal, local fish fresh from Ito Port, carefully arranged on specially selected dishes. An impressive feast for the eyes!
To cater to individual preferences, the aperitif, main dish, and dessert can each be selected from a choice of three. (This service is available for groups of up to 10 adults; please check-in before 5:00 p.m. on the day.)

Nesugata that commands great views over Shimoda Bay. I also recommend taking a cruise on the Izukyu Marine, a ship modeled after Commodore Perry's Black Ships, which will take you on a 20-minute cruise around Shimoda Port.

Baystage Shimoda, located at the ship's boarding area, houses an interesting museum that brings the history of the area to life, as well as a conveyer-belt sushi restaurant and the morning market every Sunday; all worth a visit!

Ms. Horie of the Seizan Yamato recommends sightseeing spots and activities in Ito

You should definitely try and get out and enjoy the wonderful nature that surrounds Ito. You could take a walk along the exciting Jogasaki-kaigan coastline, or on a clear day go and see the view of Mt. Fuji from the top of 321 m-high Mt. Komuro. The area around it is a park where, during April and early May, 100,000 azalea flowers blossom.

The lavish use of high-quality woods such as Japanese cedar and Japanese cypress in the building's interior is a real must-see. Here, you can see how the rooms were when the ryokan was still in use, as well as visit the cafe or make use of the public baths (on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only).

I also recommend the geisha experience, available for an extra charge, during which you can try on a kimono, be made up like a geisha, and take pictures.

There is an event held July that is very popular with international visitors: the Tub Race! Known in Japanese as the Tarai Nori Kyoso, this fun race involves competitors riding in big wooden tubs about 1 m in diameter down the Matsu River, which flows through the heart of Ito City. Tourists are allowed to take part, too!

Spring in Sendai brings with it sakura, the delicate cherry blossoms celebrated for their fleeting beauty. Cherry blossoms in Sendai are usually in full bloom around the first week of April and exhibit a gorgeous pink color. Listed below are some of the best places to view sakura in Sendai.

Aobayama Park
Aobayama Park is enriched with history and tradition and is a popular spot to sit and relax on a quiet day. A short distance away at the site of Sendai Castle are sweeping views of the city center. This sprawling park is dotted with places to view sakura in the spring, like the trees blossoming around Date Masamune's statue.

Sakura trees also line the road and moats leading from Sendai Castle's tower and the path leading to the nearby high school, transforming the entire area as the trees reach full bloom.

Access: Directly next to the Sendai Loople Bus Sendai Castle stop

Nishi Park
Founded in 1876, Nishi Park lies along the western edge of Sendai. As the preeminent cherry blossom viewing area in Sendai, it always attracts large crowds. At night, the park's trees are illuminated by paper lanterns, enhancing the atmosphere of the park.

Access: Directly next to Omachi Nishi Koen-mae or Tamachi Shogakko-mae bus stops

Tsutsujigaoka Park
Over 1,000 trees were brought to this park by the fourth lord of the Sendai domain. The trees of Tsutsujigaoka Park blossom slightly later than other Sendai areas, but feature an impressive array of unusual plants like the ukon sakura, which blossoms in a pale gold.

Access: A 5-minute walk from Tsutsujigaoka Station on the JR Senseki Line (one stop from Sendai Station)

Osaki Hachimangu Shrine is a designated national treasure with over 400 years of history. The stone torii gate, light pink sakura blossoms, and lush green Japanese cedars stand in perfect harmony on the pathway leading to the shrine.

Making Spirits Bright and Filling the City With Light: Sendai's Winter Events and Festivals!

Pageant of Starlight
As winter arrives in Sendai, everyone starts to look forward to one particular event. From December 12 until the end of this year, the center of the city will be illuminated in the "Sendai Pageant of Starlight," an event which has taken place since 1986. From its humble beginnings as a small event by local volunteers, it has now become a seasonal tradition of Sendai, and well known across Japan. Hundreds of thousands of lights envelop Jozenji-dori and Aoba-dori, Sendai's main avenues, warming the winter with its romantic atmosphere. For the duration of the event, Loople Sendai, the city's sightseeing bus, runs a special "Pageant of Starlight" route allowing riders to travel through a tunnel of light as it passes through the streets of Sendai.

Hatsuuri Sale (First Sale)
On January 2 of each year businesses across Japan have a New Year's tradition of selling fukubukuro, or "lucky bags." Customers pay a set price for a bag with unknown contents, taking a chance that they'll end up with a great deal like a designer handbag or high-tech electronics. Sendai's department stores, shopping streets, and specialty stores have held their own "Sendai Hatsuuri Sale" (First Sale) since the time of samurai warlord Date Masamune. Sendai's First Sale is famous for its extravagant lucky bags filled to the brim with premium goods. Many of the "lucky bags" are actually "lucky boxes!" At the most popular stores, hopeful customers will line up from the night before, hoping to strike a bargain before supplies run out. The chance to strike it big in Sendai means that there are more shoppers streaming in from outside prefectures than from the city itself!

Dontonsai Festival
During the Dontonsai Festival on January 14 worshippers gather their New Year's decorations and burn them in a large bonfire at local shrines to pray for happiness, prosperity, and good health. At the city's Osaki Hachimangu Shrine, a national treasure, men clad only in a white cotton cloth with headband and socks to match carry a lantern, bell, and paper in the hadakamairi, or "nude march." This raucous event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the shrine, worshippers and sightseers alike.

Although overall northeastern Japan's Tohoku region has an image of chilly winters, the balancing effects of the nearby Pacific Ocean means Sendai City is comparatively warm. With plenty of clear skies and calm weather, famous hotsprings nearby at Akiu and Sakunami, access to nearby ski resorts, and all of the exciting winter events, Sendai makes a great winter getaway!

Miyagi Prefecture, in which Sendai is located, is not only home to one of Japan's most famous rice-producing regions, but also boasts some of Japan's leading tuna-catching ports such as the domestically famous ports of Shiogama, Ishinomaki, and Kesennuma. You can't go wrong with sushi from Sendai!

Also, don't forget that Miyagi's great tasting rice means that it produces great tasting sake. Why not try it along with some of Sendai's plentiful fresh seafood, like raw tuna, bonito, saury, shark fin, oysters, scallops or abalone?

A new star has been born into Sendai's culinary scene! "Sendai zuke-don" takes local whitefish and other fresh seafood, pickles it in a specially-made sauce, and then serves it on top of a bowl of Miyagi's best sushi rice. The picture above is just one example from a Sendai shop, but each restaurant will vary the ingredients used for a unique style and flavor. Try as many different varieties of "zuke-don" as you can the next time you're in Sendai!

Here is a picture of the seafood bowl we tried at JR Sendai Station's Sushi Street, on the third floor near the central bullet train ticket gates. Mouthwatering!

Sendai Beef

Sendai beef stands alongside Ohmi beef, Matsuzaka beef, and Yonezawa beef as one of Japan's premiere beef brands. "Sendai beef" is the name given to the meat from the best quality Japanese Black breed of cattle that are fattened up in Miyagi Prefecture.
Visitors can satisfy their hunger with select cuts of Sendai beef at the teppan-yaki (hot plate) counter of the Hayase Restaurant located in the Hotel Metropolitan Sendai. The hotel is directly connected to the adjacent JR Sendai Station.

Beef tongue (Gyutan)

When discussing Sendai's food, one cannot fail to mention the aromatic and uniquely textured dish of beef tongue. Sendai was the birthplace of barbecued beef tongue when, during the food shortages that followed World War II, a cook decided to create a dish "for citizens working towards the reconstruction of the city". Charcoal-grilled beef tongue is usually served together with oxtail soup and boiled barley and rice; a real taste of Sendai.

Sweet Green Soybeans (Zunda)

A popular local specialty is the elegant and fragrant zunda mochi sweet snack, which is made from mashed and sweetened soybean paste wrapped in a sticky rice cake. Zunda can also be enjoyed in a number of other variations in the cafes around Sendai, which serve everything from zunda shakes to zunda snow cones.

Chilled Chinese Noodles (Hiyashi Chuka)

The dish known as hiyashi chuka, chilled Chinese noodles, was born in the Chinese restaurants of Sendai when someone decided to create "a ramen dish you can eat in summertime". Whilst this has now become a regular summertime dish around the country, hiyashi chukka can be enjoyed all year round in many of Sendai's restaurants.

The noodles are covered with a variety of ingredients, from the expensive (jellyfish and shrimp) to the simple (ham and cucumber).

Sasa-Kamaboko (Bamboo-Leaf-Shaped Fish Cake)

Here is one of Sendai's most famous souvenirs, a unique bamboo-leaf-shaped fish cake made from grilled white-fleshed fish like flounder. There are loads of variations to try, including fish cakes with cheese, salmon and zunda inside.

It is these trees that have become the symbol of Sendai as the "City of Trees" and it is this street that acts as the stage for the Jozenji Street Jazz Festival in Sendai.

First started by a group of volunteers in 1991, the festival uses jazz's freedom of spirit and expression as its themes, and now features over 700 domestic and international acts, including both professional and amateur musicians. The festival even features performances of other musical genres, filling the center of Sendai with music.

Nowadays, Sendai's Michinoku Yosakoi festival gathers participants from not only the Tohoku region but from all over Japan and has become one of Sendai's main events.

The basic "rules" of the Michinoku Yosakoi Festival are that participants dance to background music featuring a line from a local folksong, with a clapper-type percussion instrument called a naruko in hand. The participants, however, are completely free to choose the types of costumes and dances they use, meaning that the music can vary from folksong to heavy rock. Spectators are overwhelmed by the loud music and energetic and beautiful dance routines that engulf the whole city in a wild enthusiasm.

The viewing platform behind the Fudoson temple building is also a great place from which to take in the falls.

The best time to see the autumn colors is mid- to late October.
Access: Buses leave from outside the West Exit of Sendai Station. Take the Miyagi Transport Co., Ltd. bus headed for Akiu Onsen/Akiu Otaki Waterfalls (85 minutes). Get off at the Akiu Otaki bus stop. The falls are 7 minutes' walk away.

The Sendai Tanabata Festival is a traditional event with a 400-year history, said to have been started by Sendai's feudal lord, Date Masamune. The Tanabata Festival is the most famous of the Tohoku region's three great festivals.

A major highlight of the festival is the decoration of Sendai's shopping arcades with over 1,500 tanabata-kazari, streamers and strips of decorated Japanese paper suspended from green bamboo. Sendai is transformed by these colorful decorations, and watching them blow in the breeze allows visitors to experience the sensation of Japanese summertime.

During the festival, Sendai's citizens put on brilliant performances and traditional dances. On the eve of the festival (5 August), a fireworks display, featuring 16,000 fireworks, is held. The best places from which to watch are alongside the Hirose River and around Nishi Park.
What is Tanabata?
Tanabata is a seasonal festival that is celebrated all over Japan at the turning of the seasons, usually on 7 July or sometimes a month later on 7 August. During Tanabata, people write their wishes on thin strips of paper called tanzaku and then tie them to bamboo grass. The bamboo decorations used for Sendai's Tanabata Festival are remade by hand yearly, with people usually writing wishes related to studies, business or good health, and are part of the festival's seven traditional decorations. The main decorations used are streamers called fuki-nagashi that are based on a motif of weaving yarn and express a wish for improved artistic skill.

Beppu Onsen, Japan's quirky hot-spring home for over a millennium

Beppu, located in Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, is said to have more hot spring waters than any other location in Japan. For over 1000 years, the area has been awash in sulfuric springs, producing bubbling pools and geysers of hot gasses, giving the entire area a wild appearance.

Locals come from all over Japan to see the steamy source waters of Beppu's famous onsen. Visiting all eight hot spring sources is known as the jigoku meguri, or "hell tour," named for the dramatic image of the sweltering springs. Although direct translation of Beppu's sights might not make it seem the most hospitable destination, the locals have discovered ways to entertain as well as offer the creature comforts of a world-class hot spring resort. Most striking among Beppu's eight springs are the cobalt blue waters of the "sea hell," the vivid red of the "blood pond hell," and the smoldering mud pits of the "monk's hell," creating a kind of eccentric onsen amusement park.

The eight springs of Beppu have each given rise to a number of hot spring inns, using the natural spring waters to offer the ultimate in relaxation. Lying on a hill above Beppu's scenic bay, the area around the Kankaiji spring is particularly famous for its inns. Nearby, from the heights of Mt. Tsurumi, it's possible to see all the way to the island of Shikoku. This lofty region is home to Suginoi Hotel.

Rooms at the Suginoi Hotel are divided between two buildings, the 14-story Hon-kan and the 13-story Hana-kan. A short walk from either building leads to the heart of Suginoi, its extensive bathhouse complex Tanayu. After relaxing in the warm spring waters, Suginoi still has much to offer, including a full array of treatments at its luxurious spa and all-weather excitement at The Aqua Garden.

Among the many baths at Suginoi Hotel, attention is immediately drawn to Tanayu, with its tiered set of open-air baths spreading out before a magnificent view overlooking the Beppu night skyline below and bay beyond. The Tanayu bathhouse also features a variety of other baths, like its traditional wooden barrel baths, waterfall showers, and more.

Japan is perhaps one of the world's most unique countries. From its centuries old history to its stunning natural beauty, and onto its place as a gadget capital of the world, there's so much to do and see. Japanese traditional culture is fascinating, its natural landscapes spellbinding, and yet "Hello Kitty", high end fashion, and technology fill the store fronts in the major cities. The following is our take on the 10 best locations to experience Japan's rich culture and history.

1. The Imperial Palace, Tokyo

No visit to Japan would be complete without taking a look at the Imperial Palace. With the exception of 2 January and 23 December, the Palace is closed to the public, but visitors can still wander its outskirts. A grand view of the Imperial Palace complete with its landmark Nijubashi bridge can be seen from the Outer Palace Garden which visitors are free to explore. If shopping is more your style, then take a quick peek and photo at the Palace just to show you've been there, and then enjoy the rest of the day blocks away in Ginza, one of Tokyo's best shopping districts.

Hotels in Ginza, Tokyo

2. Sensoji Temple, Tokyo

There are many shrines in and around Tokyo, but none on quite the same scale as Sensoji temple, with its rumored statue of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Located in Tokyo's Asakusa area, this impressive five story pagoda temple is Tokyo's largest and is well worth a visit. It's popular and gets crowded but the experience of walking up the steps to pay your respects by tossing a coin and bowing your head in prayer in the traditional manner is something that you'll never forget.

Hotels in Asakusa

3. Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is a sight you shouldn't miss. It can be reached as a day-trip from Tokyo, fitting most schedules. It's a spectacular landmark often found on photos and art as a symbol of Japan. If you have the energy, you can undertake the 4 mile climb to the summit. Those who prefer their travel experiences to be a little less physical can enjoy the spectacular view while relaxing in the hot springs at nearby Hakone.

Article: Stunning Views of Mt. Fuji from your Hotel

4. Gion, Kyoto

To experience some traditional Japanese culture, make sure you visit Kyoto's oldest entertainment district, Gion. The Minamiza Theater is Japan's oldest kabuki (Japanese drama) theater, and you may be lucky to get tickets for one of their extravagant all-male productions. To see geisha, you can get a taste at Gion Corner, or opt for the full version at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater. Check local listings to secure tickets before you go, especially if you are visiting Japan during a busy vacation period.

5. Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kyoto

Located in the Eastern region of Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera is a 17th century temple complex that offers stunning views over the city. Apart from the five tier temple, those looking for love may find the answer to their prayers by following an ancient ritual, or sip water collected from a waterfall set in a spectacular location.

6. Cherry Blossom Festivals (Various Locations)

Visitors to Japan who arrive between January and April should make a point of visiting one of the many cherry blossom festivals across the country. Often illuminated at night, the festivals also sometimes offer traditional entertainment options like tea ceremonies, Japanese music, or dance. There are many places all over Japan to enjoy these beautiful flowers. For more information, take a look at our top 15 cherry blossom tourist spots.

7. Himeji Castle

Also known as White Egret Castle, this 17th century castle is the most visited castle in Japan. It's located west of Kansai and is close to the city of Osaka. In 1993 Himeji Castle was designated as a World Heritage Site. It's considered to be one of Japan's most beautiful castles. Apart from the castle, there's a beautiful walled garden to admire. For the best pictures of the area, walk a little further west from the castle to the nearby Senhime Shrine.

A theme park that offers more than the usual mechanical thrills and spills, Okinawa World is also home to the Gyokusendo Cave. Offering 3 miles of exploring with some 200,000 stalactites, Gyokusendo Cave is a natural experience you shouldn't miss. Apart from the impressive caves, there are traditional crafts to try, traditional houses, and a snake park.

9. Kenroku-en Garden, Kanazawa, Ishikawa

Considered one of the top 3 gardens in Japan, Kenroku-en Garden is a must-see for anyone interested in Japanese landscaping. Within its 25 acres you'll find ponds, bridges, waterfalls, stone lanterns, Japanese maple trees, cherry blossom trees and tea houses. Since the garden is a popular place for tourists, be sure to arrive early before it gets overcrowded. Then, cross the bridge from the gardens and explore nearby Kanazawa Castle.

10. Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima

Showing the aftermath of the bomb that dropped on Hiroshima, the Peace Memorial Park is a place to reflect on the real cost of war. The A-bomb dome is what remains of the few buildings that withstood the blast and is now a World Heritage Site. Following a visit to the Peace Memorial Park, consider taking a trip to Miyajima. Approximately an hour out of Hiroshima, you'll find one of the top views in Japan on this island, the giant torii gate that appears to float above the rising tide.
Japan has its share of commercial museums and theme parks, just as it has its share of universally known fast food outlets, but the Japanese attractions listed above give an overview of Japanese life, culture and history in this beautiful country.

German architect Bruno Taut (1880-1938) praised the beauty of the rural villages of Sado Island in his writings on Japan. Such scenery offered him glimpses of an ancient Japan where people lived in harmony with nature. Sights like these have for the most part been lost in Japan due to the rapid modernization starting in the latter half of the 19th century, but they are still commonplace at Sado, where they have been preserved partly due to the island's isolation.

The largely uninhabitable mountain ranges that cover most of the land in Japan have offered a modest place to live for families and communities who honor the many Shinto gods, maintain harmony with nature, and grow rice. Currently, various aspects of Japanese culture are being sent out into the world, such as electronics, animation, and fashion, but Japan's inherent value, which is universal throughout the world, is its knowledge of how to live in harmony with nature and preserve the environment. The people of Sado still maintain a firm grasp on this knowledge.

In May, rice planting begins all over Sado Island. Rice cultivation is carried out on a limited amount of land, resulting in the unique sight of small stepped rice paddies.

Sado Island, which is the second largest outlying Japanese island after Okinawa, is about one and a half times the size of the 23 wards of Tokyo. Its major industry is neither fishing nor tourism, but agriculture. The southern part of the island is hit by a warm ocean current which supports an exuberance of plant life not normally found at that latitude, and it has an abundance of fruit growers. In the north is Mt. Kinpoku at a height of over 1,000 meters surrounded by old growth forests. Thus a variety of scenery and culture has developed on the island depending on the region.

A lion dance performed to the beat of an onidaiko drum (also known as an ondeko). This is one type of traditional performing art that can be seen at all festivals held on the island, and is performed in order to pray for a good harvest.

How about taking a trip to Sado Island where people maintain their unique culture and live in harmony with nature? The following are some of the best things to see.

Toki (Japanese crested ibis)

This bird was named by German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), who visited Japan in the 1820s, based on a specimen he took home. The bird used to be found throughout Japan, but its numbers fell rapidly at the end of the Edo Period and start of the Meiji Period (1868). The toki was believed to have gone extinct, but it was discovered on Sado Island in the 1930s. The people of Sado Island were not aware that the toki was thought to be extinct, and they affectionately coexisted with the bird as they did other wildlife. The toki went extinct in the wild at one point in the 1980s, but efforts are currently being made at Sado to bring it back.

Noh

Noh, which was established in the 14th century by Zeami Motokiyo (1363-1443), is the quintessential performing art of Japan, and many of its plays strongly convey the Japanese view of life and death. In Japan, it is believed that the souls of persons who have passed away leaving bitter feelings in this world wander the world after death causing illness, bringing about natural catastrophes, and so on. Noh plays often depict the process of appeasing these wandering souls. Watching Noh is not just a form of entertainment, but it is also considered to be a ceremony to appease wandering souls.

Currently one-third of the Noh stages in Japan are concentrated in Sado, which is sacred ground for this art form. Here, Noh was originally entertainment for the governing classes, but its development has been unique in that it has been passed on by farmers. In June of each year, stages are set up at the shrines in each region to host outdoor Noh plays which are dedicated as rituals. These are entertainment for the farmers and at the same time, rituals to please the gods and ceremonies to appease wandering souls. Zeami Motokiyo, who was involved in a power struggle in Kyoto, came to Sado. His soul as well is being purified by the people of Sado.

Noh is performed on the precincts of shrines as a ritual, and each performer on the stage is a person of Sado. These people learn stage performance and Noh chanting from an early age while pursuing agricultural and other types of work. The Noh performances in June can be enjoyed at ethereal stages where it is possible to hear the sound of birds and frogs.

Gold and silver mine and Sado

Visitors to Sado are taken by the beauty of its abundant natural scenery and serene seas, but the fact that this great natural beauty has survived at Sado to the degree that it has is nothing short of miraculous. This is because Sado Island has one of the world's biggest gold mines. Mining uses vast quantities of wood, but the people of Sado knew what would happen if they cut down all of the trees on the mountains. The well water they used for drinking water would become muddied, there would be sand storms, and the soil flowing down from the mountains would muddy the seas and wipe out the shellfish. They also knew from experience that nourishment from the layers of dead leaves on the mountains supported plankton in the seas. Thus, communities continued to protect the mountain trees, even if it sometimes meant going against the wishes of the feudal government.

The Aikawa Gold Mine, which closed in 1989, is one of the few mines in the world to operate over several centuries. Visitors are overwhelmed by the sheer size of the old mine, but the real sights are the abundance of natural surroundings which have been preserved in spite of the mine and the culture of Sado.

<img alt="Yoi no Mai" (evening dance)" src="http://article.japanican.com/en/img/yoi_no_mai.jpg" width="199" height="300" class="mt-image-center" style="text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0 auto 10px;" />

"Yoi no Mai" (evening dance) is a fascinating festival that takes place in June in Aikawa, the location of the gold mine. Participants parade around town at dusk singing and dancing together with shamisen music. The sound of melancholy songs drives off the gloom of the hard work done by gold mine laborers in the past and comforts the souls of those who passed away at a young age due to the grueling work.

The gold mine at Sado not only produced gold and silver, but it also led to the creation of some secondary products: civil engineering technology, metal casting ("Zuicho," a rooftop decoration adorning Tokyo Imperial Palace, was made by Shodo Sasaki who was born on Sado and trained in metal casting), and ceramic ware. The clay, which contains a large quantity of fine iron, is taken from the soil that has been extracted from the gold mine. In Aikawa, visitors can make traditional ceramic ware of Sado.

Sado Island used to be where people who were defeated in power struggles at the capital were sent, and Zeami Motokiyo as well as members of the imperial family and aristocrats have lived here. The culture of Kyoto was thus passed on directly, and there are still many historic temples. Furthermore, the island's wondrous natural environment and isolation led it to become a sacred land that gathered many religious devotees. There are many areas of Sado which are still home to these "souls."
